500X Xenon lights enable

Post by wildiesel »

Hi all.

I am new to the forum and recently bought myself a 500X.

It's a secondhand 500X cross 1.4T Multiair which has the halogen lights but I asked them to retrofit the xenon lights as an optional extra. The workshop said it's fine and it will work because the mounts are the same and the xenons have the same connector.

I do have 2 problems though. The lights are working fine but as soon as the alternator starts to charge after starting the engine, both lights start to flicker. Voltage at the lights measured 13.4-13.8 when the alternator kicks in which is normal. However, these D5S bulbs are sensitive to overvoltage and has a maximum voltage rating of 13.2V; which is why they flicker.

The second problem is that the high beam doesn't work because it used to have halogen lights. Halogen bulbs have 2 filaments; one for low beam and 1 for high beam. The low beam is kept on when you flash but is turned off when you switch to high beam. The xenons have a flap which moves in front of the bulb to cut off the light for low beam. The high beam works if I flash but as soon as I switch to high beam the lights turn off but I can hear the flap move.

My question is if it might be possible that these can be fixed/changed in the body computer. The connectors are the same and the looms are the same so surely it's just a configuration that prevents the ECU from removing power from the low beam?

Can someone please investigate if there is an option to "enable" xenon lights in the body computer? Maybe it can also make the computer regulate the voltage going to the lights as they work normally (obviously) when xenons are standard?

I look forward to everyone's responses.

Thanks! :D

There is any modification to BC. Orginal Xenon lamps are plug&play to a car body and connector is the same. Only there is necessary to put diode STTH3002 between pin 5 and 7 according to following diagram

and put mass to pin 8 according to attached picture

Thanks for the help!

What could be the cause for the lights to flicker when the engine is running?

To update: I think the alternator has a dead diode because I'm getting almost 3V AC at the battery, which would explain the lights flickering and the enormous amounts of electrical issues I had since I got the car.

Just one question. What is the purpose of making the ground pin8 thicker?

Have you solved issue with flickering lights?
I don't understand your question about thicker mass.

You do not need diode after that.
