How to choose scanner for Multiecuscan (Punto 176)

Post by Punto176 »

Hello!

Can I use cheap scanners like ELM 327 from Ebay to test Punto 176 (1998, with 3-point connector - I will by additional Fiat adapter for scanner) engine ?

Is there some proven models of such scanners ?

Tried to search forum but didn't find anything exactly about unexpensive scanners complictable with Punto 176, just a topic about some problems with ELM 327

Please, answer as soon as possible

First of all go to this web site: http://www.multiecuscan.net/SupportedVehiclesList.aspx

Try to find your car on the list! And you will see what kind of ECU's does FES software has as a support for your car!
It is probably ABS ECU and AIRBAG ECU supported! For those ECU's you need a VAG COM USB KKL 409.1 interface and 3 pin adaptor!

To scan your ENGINE ECU you will need IAW SCAN software. Just go to this web site: http://iaw-scan.sourceforge.net/
Cheers ;)

Many thanks!

Then, what is the difference between VAG KKL and more expensive devices like ELM 327 (even in cheap ebay version) ?
VAG KKL is unable to scan ABS, airbag and other additional systems ?
Currently, I need to check engine and all its sensors.

The KKL is a very basic opto-isolator interface, which doesn't support the CAN language.
The ELM327 is a more advanced EOBD based chip which can do a lot more language translation and does support CAN.
Crucially though, each can do things that the other can't, so for full coverage from FES you need a KKL and an ELM327, or you can go for the more expensive OBDKey option, which supports all the features.

Thanks!
I looked at 3-pin adapter and at VAG USB KKL scanners (which mentioned in the How to use page), and there are also
VAG K + CAN 1.4 OBD2 devices, they are a little more expensive and have a slightly different wide connector, whis a 2 bigger contacts between contacts in one of the rows.
I will by VAG USB KKL with connectos same as on adapter, but what is the differens between it and VAG K+CAN 1.4 ?
Can it also read CAN ?

Please do not buy the VAG K+CAN 1.4 interface!
It is a little bit different interface and it will not work with your Punto!

Just try to find VAG COM KKL USB 409.1 interface! That is one that you need!

The VAG K+CAN 1.4 interface in mainly used for correction of millage on the odometer for VW group! ;)

Thanks!

I've run Multiecuscan (free mode), and in Punto 98 75 there is no engine, only ABS and other additional systems.
Can I check engine with this VAG KKL ("blue box") ?

As mentioned before the multiecuscan does not support your ECU yet. However you may use the IAW ECU Scan or it's succesor - IAW-Scan 2:
