Fiat Marea Weekend Airbag ECU 46409123 dead - How to check?

Hi

I have a 1999 Fiat Marea Weekend ELX with the numerous 3-Pin diagnostic connectors. Using a VAG COM lead and home made 3-Pin cable which takes pin 7 from the 16 pin connector to the K-Line on the three pin connector I can connect to the Engine ECU and ABS ECU without any problems. I cannot connect to the Airbag ECU which is where my problem lies (Airbag light on). Tried all three ECU type options in FES numerous times and just nothing. My airbag ECU has the number 46409123 on it so it looks like it's the Alied Signal 68HC11E9

Can anybody suggest how I can tell whether the Airbag ECU is in fact working at all and is not completely dead? I've checked all fuses and now I'm beginning to think I need a replacement ECU.

Any help/thought would be appreciated.

Hasn't anybody got any ideas?
MOT is due today and I still have the Airbag light on. Can take the bulb out but would rather have the safety of the bag working should I hit something hard.
