Grande Punto Steering ECU Alternator Procedure>

Post by alexh365 »

Hi Yani,

Is there any truth (and can you see if you can work your magic) on a procedure carried out to the power steering ECU to make it play nicely with a new alternator?

Supposedly Examiner does this...

That's very weird. I don't think that the system can make difference between original and non-original alternator.
I think that the problem is with the voltage or the power of the new alternator. Quick check at the documentation shows that you need 90A alternator for 1.3 multijet with AC, and for 1.9 multijet with AC you need 120A alternator.
All electric power steering systems turn off immediately when the supply voltage drops below given limit, or when the Body Computer detects that the alternator is not charging enough. Then you can restore the system only with key-OFF -> key-ON...
There is probably some small voltage drop caused by an electronic component turning ON or OFF (glow plugs, aux heater, xenon, AC compressor,...) which overloads the alternator and turns off your EPS.
You can try to monitor the power supply voltage with Multiecuscan (you can record a graph) to see if there is a drop in voltage right before it turns off.
