I am thinking of buying Multiecuscan, but am a complete novice....
A couple of questions.. my reason for wanting it firstly is to be able to check when my dpf needs regenerating/has regenerated, instead of doing weekly trips up the motorway not knowing whether I need to or not. I'm sure that I will find many other uses for it as I get to know the software, but would you recommend me buying it for this use? Is it easy to read?
Also feel a bit silly asking but does the engine have to be on when downloading? Does the car have to be running? I have a Fiat Doblo multijet 1.3. I'm sure it's a learning curve but I'm right at the bottom of it at the moment!

First of all identify your exact Fiat Doblo 1.3 MJET (there are several versions e.g. 119 or 152 or 263 or ...).
Once located if the Engine ECU (normally firt on list of modules) is listed in RED then you need a Registered version of Multiecuscan.
If you have already downloaded the free version then you can try connecting to the engine ECU. It will tell you if you need the registerted version.
To connect to any module you will have to have the ignation turned on. You can read all sorts of information without the engine running, perform actuator test etc.
However some things will require the engine running. Depends what you want to do / are testing.
As for using the Multiecuscan to determine if you need to regenerate the DPF then this may prove a little more difficult. Fiat ECUScan will tell you the clogging level, when a regeneration last took place and how long it took. It will not tell you when a regeneration is due. To my knowledge there is no fixed value of clogging that will determine/trigger a DPF regen. Also after a regen the clogging level will reduce to another level of clogging. I never completely clears.
To do what you want to do then you will have to regualry monitor clogging level, mileage since last regen etc. to see if you can determine the clogging level and miles since last regen when a normal regeneration occurs. You may then be able to predict when a regen is required. I don't think anybody has tried to do this yet.

Thank you, that is very helpful. I don't understand why there isn't a light to tell you when the dpf needs regenerating, but still... It would mean that I could check to see if the clogging seems high then take if for a 30mile trip at 70 and see whether it has dropped!

Ok sorry, I told you I was a complete novice.... How do I know which doblo I have? I have a doblo family 1248cc - no idea any of the other info.....

Your chassis and engine numbers will be the key.

Ok, I think I have worked out the 223 on the engine and chassi mean I have a type 223 (or is it not that obvious?) 1.3 multijet. Mine is a multijet family but is listed as a cargo - does that matter?
Can you tell me which bit I need to be looking at to tell whether the dpf has regerated? I drove it down the motorway today and would like to think that it had, but have no idea of course. I may not be able to predict when it needs doing, but to know that it has regenerated and isn't all clogged up (having just spent a small fortune on getting a new dpf and associated expensive bits and pieces) would help me to sleep at night! I am yet to buy the cables but have worked out (I think..) that i need the ELM 327 v1.3 and adaptor cables 1 and 2 to look at everything - I might not have to look at everything if I just want to look at the dpf but can't see anything that is obvious to point me towards it.

whoops, sorry was it the ECU as you said before? In which case I don't need the registered version as it's listed in black

Based on the info you have given you need to select in Multiecuscan
Doblo (Type 223) Cargo MJET 1.3 16V
You need the select the Engine ECU. I see that two are listed.
A 6F3 and 6JF.
I suggest you try connecting to both. One may result in an invalid ISO code. The one that doesn't give and invalid ISO code if the one for you.

If you can get a true ELM327 V1.4 then I would go with this. If you already have a working V1.3 then this is OK as well.
