Faulty ELM on Doblo 120

Hi everybody I am a new member & this is my first post
I also have a problem with the ELM327 on my Doblo 120.When connecting properly the dash goes off & the fuel lt flashes
I get access to engine but nothing else.
But if you connect up & only push the ELM plug into the OBD socket a small amount then BINGO
I get access to engine-body-dash-service etc and this is not a one off I can do this every time
