Pls help identify Brava Airbag ECU model!

Post by panderson »

Dear members!

Airbag problem solved, working fine now, in the plastic bag after re-soldering all pins and cleaning every bit of the cables, joints! Error free, and light is off

I can summarize the procedure with pictures if needed.

The bigger problem is the leaking coolant from the heating radiator itself, but this will have to wait until spring

Thank you all for the help!

Dear members!

* I want to clear the error code on an Brava SX 1.4 Airbag ECU
* Using KKL cable and Win7 x86 + drivers from Windows Update
* COM5 port driver setup to minimum delay
* multiecuscan set to COM5, testing interface is OK (connected to Airbag ECU + key on MAR)
* Select: Bravo\Brava 1.4 12V --> Airbag

Case 1: Scan Modules (F11)
- Airbag
- UNKNOWN/UNSUPPORTED
- ISO Code: 26 86 80 80 01
- COMPLETED

Case 2: BREED Airbag (1st option)
- Cannot connect to module

Case 3: BREED MY97 Airbag (2F)
- Connected: Invalid ISO code
- ECU ISO code: 26 86 80 80 01
- FIAT drawing number: 00 46 53 77 77
- SW version: 1.1
- HW version: 1.0
- ECU programming date: 01.07.2053

* Error code:
- 09 - Passenger squib circuit: Value too high: Intermittent/Present: 229

* 1.5 years before I replaced (re soldered) the connector pins in the ECU connection of the ECU because the original pins have corroded and the ECU lost its ground if I remember correctly. Then after a reset at the car shop it worked OK. For further protection I have enclosed the airbag ECU in a plastic sac because of the bloody condensing moisture coming from the heating tubes.

* The airbag lamp lit up after replacing joint of the cable from the alternator to the battery, hence I suspected a low voltage warning and didn't ask the guys in the shop to reset the warning light.

Question 1: My Brava is a 1999 with only *one* airbag, the passenger has no airbag, the space above the airbag looks like this [http://www.parts-specs.com/photos/02493 ... X-2001.jpg];
so this error code should relate to the squib in the steering wheel?

Question 2: Is my Airbag really not supported or have I overlooked something?
Numbers on the ECU casing from top to bottom: 46537777
5WK42700 99902600 C404
Bar code: 99902600A98223441394 33980304

Question 3: Are there any common faulty connectors for the airbag to check? Where do I start?

Question 4: Is this airbag ECU fitted with a dummy passenger squid resistance which has lost connection?

Thank you in advance and have a marry Christmas! ;)

Cheers!

#1: here are 2 guesses:
a) maybe your Brava when came out from factory had 2 airbags but had car accident in the past so complete dash was changed. The donor car had dash with only one airbag and they put dash with one airbag on your car.
b) maybe airbag unit was changed and they change it other airbag ECU which had options for 2 airbags (maybe car had accident before or something else).

#2: It is very hard to find good software which can read old airbag models. Yes it is possible for MES not to have support. If you can connect it with MES on some other model that it is really good - you are lucky. Try to clear errors. If does it not work than try 10-20 times.

#3: You need to check airbag installation. Since you have only 1 airbag it should not be too much work. Check also do you have installation for 2nd airbag. Maybe at the end of installation of 2nd airbag is small simulator. Maybe that is causing problems. Also try to remove connector from driver airbag and put it back and than delete errors. Sometimes it is written one error of 2nd airbag but problem is in 1st airbag.

#4: You have to check installation maybe again is somewhere loos connection.

As I can see from your data list production of your airbag ecu is year 2053. I am million % sure that someone in the past did reset this airbag ecu with CLONE interface (clone programs). Maybe this is problem. Maybe you will need to reset airbag ecu again but before try with MES and checking installation.

Have just checked this out for you.

1) Your car is technically a 1V BRAVA BZ/DS (1995 to 1998). I can provide more data but you will have to PM me your chassis number. So your car was built in 1998 or less and I assume only registered in 1999.

2) The part number 46537777 is the correct and only part number (and thus make) of airbag ECU fitted to your car.

3) The car only ever had the ONE drivers airbag

4) I does have, as you have found out, a cable harness for a passenger airbag, however none was fitted.

5) As there is no passenger air bag there is a resistor block, P/N:71712735, connected to the passenger airbag cable connector.

6) Original airbag ECU is no longer available and out of production as far as Fiat are concerned.

Based on all the above I think that your problem lies with the cabling and/or the dummy resistor.

With regards to MultiECUScan then I think you airbag is not officially supported and/or the ISO Code is not recognised/programmed in MES to be acceptable.

I've looked at all the Bravo/Brava airbags the single bag is basic Breed ECU is part number 60656767. For two bags (even if you only have one fitted) then the P/N is 51711816.

The fact that you can connect with the Breed 2L option means that your ECU is at least recognised and readable and it is an ISO Code issue.

I think this explains some things...

Thank you FIAT, very wise

@ s130: Thank you very much, it's a miracle that a shortage didn't blow the airbag in my face during driving. The info you gave me was pretty useful! I looked up the adequate ePER section and found the wiring diagram! I'll restore the connector and if the ACU still functions, I'll get back to the problem.

Note: seems I have not put the damn little thing in a plastic bag after all.. :x
