I’m sure I’m just another dumb bunny. I have a Alfa 156 twin spark 2000. I have bought all the cables from I diagnostics. I have down loaded free program. I have followed protocol and have correct ports drivers etc. still does not engage with ecu. Do I need an earlier program of multi scan considering my car is now 20 years old. Does my laptop need to be connected to wifi while I am doing this. I know this sounds basic , but I have done everything by the book.

Your Alfa ideally wants the KKL (VAG KL) interface. If you are using an ELM device then you will only be able to connect to some units and even then depending on the ELM interface you may have problems.

Connection to WiFi is not required.

Thankyou for the advice. Will try to fire up again with KKL and let you know how I go.

Yes please let us know how you get on.

I've personally encountered cases where and ELM interface will not connect but a KKL one will.

I'm not going to suggest that the ELM compatibility information is wrong but more that sometimes one interface is more "picky/temperamental" than another. This usually ends up with the end user spending much time playing around trying to get matters sorted when an interface change can quickly solve the issue.

I personally have KKL, EML and OBDLINK interfaces (plus all cables). With a bit of luck one will work.
