Everything works but proxy alignment

Hi,
Title not quite accurate it works once in a blue moon.
I have a paid up version of Multiecuscan and a theoretically modified Elm 327 ver 1.4 for Alfas' from Europe. My car is an Alfa 159 2.4 jtdm. I can access all the other features of Multiecuscan and test and modify things including the rekeying stuff. Where I have a problem is the Canbus setup/proxi-alignment. I takes about 50 attempts - if it even will that day - before it will establish a connection. It alternates the data missing in body computer and the unable to connect comments. I am connected to a Vista laptop via USB running the port at 38400. (When it does connect it will complete the alignment).
Changing the latency makes no difference.
Is it likely to be a problem with my Elm interface, the laptop or gremlins in the Alfa canbus causing me grief.
