Latency Too High error on Alfa Spider Motronic M1.5.5

I am getting the "Latency Too High!!!" error displayed in Multiecuscan (MES) when I read real time engine data /run a graph. The connection to the ECU is eventually lost and I have to reconnect. The connection time varies somethimes lasting 1 to 2 minutes, often less. It seems the less engine parameters I enable for viewing/graphing the longer the connection stays open.
From searching thie internet and this forum I can see various people have the "Latency Too High" problem. I've adjusted the COM port settings (including the High Latency mode) recomended in the MES manual and tried with two different laptops. It passes the Latecy test in MES. I'm wondering if the problem is with the Motoronic M1.5.5 ECU being too slow to respond to requests from MES or is it the other way round and MES is saying my laptop computer is not responding quicly enough,
I'm using the latest MES v3.9R1 (purchased/registered copy). I'm using a KKL/VAG cable supplied from the authorised distributor Gendan.
My vehicle is a 1998 (Phase2) Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 TS 16V.
