OBDLink Alfa connection issues

Hi
Tried to connect to an Alfa Romeo 164 Super 24V -94 car with Multiecuscan and a homemade bodged together adapter (broke out k/l-lines and ground from connector) to my OBDLink interface. I belive its a Bosch M1.7 Ecu. But i couldnt get it to connect. My question is should this work or is my adapter at fault here? The symptoms are that the activity leds on the computerside never flash at all on the interface. I have since upgraded the firmware of obdlink to latest but havnt yet had a chance to try it again (not my own car).
