Forum registration disabled?

Apologies if this has already been asked (I tried a forum search first!), but is there a reason why forum account registration is currently disabled?

Yes there is a reason why forum account registration is currently disabled
This is something that the forum owner's and moderators wanted to avoid but this site has been under yet another concerted effort of spammers trading not just the often usual non offensive content but also sexual, porn, etc. stuff and many of these sites contain malware dangerous to our community members.
The status of play is currently with the site's owners.
Whilst many forum members will no see evidence of these attacks I can assure you they are real and consume a large amount of time and effort to contain and clean up afterwards.

Having run a few forums in my time I know how annoying spambots can be.
Disabling registration altogether seems quite an extreme step though. We've always referred our MES customers to the forums as a first point of contact for information and help, but there seems to be little point in doing so now if they can't actually use the forums.
Would admin-moderated registrations and moderated post approval not be enough?
In my experience if you kill new registrations you kill the forums

Understand.
It is my understanding that the registration restriction is only temporary whilst the forum own figures the best action to take. Please bear in mind that read access is still open and the owner is also deeply busy working on MES.
I'll forward the concern.
