Proper execution of the "oil change" procedure

Hi,

I changed the oil on our 500L 1,3D.
Connected to the ECU with MES and selected "Adjustments" / "Oil change (only for versions with DPF)" -
to reset the oil dilution counter.

The procedure ecxecuted without failure. After that it, told me to turn the "key to off": I turned off ignition.
Turning on the ignition, I reconnected and read out the parameters of the last oil change wich still told me the milage / km of the last oil change (not the current km) and that the oil quality is 34% (instead of 100% for new oil, which I expected from the procedure description).

Starting the procedure a 2nd time, leads to an error "failed to execute"

Did I everything correct?
- "turn the key to off" (after procedure execution) refers to the ignition key - I assume.
- After turning off ignition: do you have to wait a certain time before turning back on ignition? At some other procedure description there was a timeout of 40s mentioned to allow the ECU for programming the value. Maybe something similar applies here too?
- I did NOT do the service reset before the oil change reset. Because I did only change the oil this time! Are the two related? That is, do you have to execute the service reset before you can execute the oil reset?
- Does the engine have to run while executing the procedure? Usually I do everything only with ignition on but engine not running.
- Do you have to start the engine / move the car a bit before the changes are visible in the parameters?

Btw.: I did the with MES 2.4. Upgraded to 2.9 yesterday, and will retry with the latest version. Will report here.

Your tips and experiences are highly appreciated!
Thank you in advance
Regards,
Michael

On the Fiat Croma 1.9MJet the oil quality is actually measured/reported as a degradation which is very confusing!

So 100% degraded is actually new fresh oil
and 10% degraded would be 90% bad

Hello s130,

Thank you for your reply.
I see. However, in the procedure description for "oil change" in MES it is stated the other way round:
That is, a value of 100% indicates the oil is completly new (0% dilution / degradation).

Anyway, even if the procedure description in MES is not correct I would expect a value of either 0% or 100% after executing the procedure.

Have you done the oil change procedure on your Croma? Do you have hints on issues I have to consider executing the procedure? E.g.:
- engine has to run / must not run.
- After executing the procdure the ignition has to be turned off for at least 1 minute
- The oil change related parameters in the ECU are not updated immediately after executing the procedure..
etc.

Michael

I need to correct my previous post. What I meant to say is that MES talks of "Oil Degradation" and then says 100% is 100% good and 0% degraded

Yes I've done it several time. On the times I recorded any numbers I had:

Before reset: oil degradation was 40% with 20,500km remaining

Before reset: oil degradation was 35% with 17,500km remaining
After reset: oil degradation was 100% with 50,000km remaining

Before reset = 42% quality (58% degraded) with 21,000 km to next change
After reset = 100% quality (00% degraded) with 50,000 km to next change

So based on what you have said then the oil change reset did NOT work.

You didn't happen to note the data, including number of oil changes before you did the reset? This will tell you if anything did change when compared with current data.

Hello s130,

To conclude this thread: The oil reset actually did work!

Intrestingly, immediately after executing the routine the ECU parameters still reflected the OLD oil data (mileage, # of changes). I think I even disconnected, started the engine and read the data again. Still it showed the old data.

But now, reading the oil change parameters again a couple of days after the execution of the change reset in MES, it shows that the oil change reset has been performed: It shows new mileage, the oil change counter is increased from 2 to 3. And the oil quality was 98,9% (As you said, new oil == 100%).

To me it seems as if the update of the (oil change) parameters does not happen immediately after execution of the routine in MES. Perhaps, the routine is only registered with the ECU and executed later on (next power cycle?).

Well this is good news.

I don't recall any "delay" in updated data being available other than disconnecting / ignition off / ignition on / reconnecting.

I won't be able to test myself as I no longer have my Croma diesel engine and have reverted to petrol :)
