Connection Failure 1997 A R Spider

Hi
I have downloaded MES onto Windows 8.1, I have a VAG KKL Interface and a 3 pin adapter to fit the old OBD socket on my 1997 Spider. I am having trouble connecting to any of the ECU's, the one I am most interested in is the Airbag one. The advice on the website is to try the free version before buying the registered version, should I be able to connect with the free version even if there is limited functionality once connected, someone has told me you need the registered version even to just connect with the old 3 pin OBD sockets. I am not computer savvy and would appreciate any advice.
I have now connected successfully to the "engine ECU" but I still cannot connect to the "airbag ECU", any ideas most welcome thanks.
