Unable to re-assign central locking fob (Stilo)

Hi,
My problem is as follows:
I bought a 2002 Stilo of a friend who's had it from new. He said one day the remote just stopped unlocking/locking the car. As far as I can see on the Internet, this is quite common.
I have a fully functioning ELM327 and a registered MES so I thought that it will be very simple to just reassign the fob.
I was wrong. When I get a message saying that I will have 15 seconds to program a new fob I press Y and then I get a message telling me to hold any button on the fob for more than 3 seconds. Tried with all 3 buttons for far more than 3 seconds and nothing happens. LED flashes but nothing happens on MES. I can only get out of the procedure by pressing Esc and then I get something like Status:UNKNOWN.
The amount of added remote controls is 0 (in the diagnostics screen).
Can anyone tell me what to do? Maybe I missed some steps in the procedure but I was carefully reading the instruction and I thought everything was done according to it...
I would appreciate any help!
