Dash shows faults when connecting to ECU's

Using a modified VAG COM cable (switchable pins), when I connect to the EPS, EBD, or ABS ECUs the dash displays a fault in those systems. (It may do it on Airbag too but I can't tell because that system has a permanent fault. 
) They are only temporary warnings, they seem to clear when you disconnect, but is that normal? It does not happen to the geabox and engine ECU's, nor with the ELM cable connected.
