Fiat panda electric steering Current absorbed 'TOO HIGH' ??

Post by CaptainSlarty »

Hi all,
I have a panda 03 to 13 model (04 1.2 8V)
ON testing with MES and cantiecar - with the delphi steering ecu I get a reading of 'too high' for current absorbed parameter with wheel centered engine running, Any movement of the wheel and the reading is 'normal' ??

What I fail to understand is that I would have expected the ECU to log this as an error, it does not. Could it possibly be an error in MES ?

I have not tried to calibrate the steering yet as I am a bit baffled by the instructions.

Control unit self-learning of steering wheel position. The front wheels must be straight to calibrate correctly.
After calibration:
To make sure that the Torque sensor is calibrated correctly, check that with the vehicle stationary the same amount of effort is required to turn the steering wheel from one end of its travel to the other.
To make sure that the position sensor is calibrated correctly, check that with the vehicle travelling (30 kph) the steering wheel returns to the central position (with a tolerance of +/- 20 degrees) when the steering wheel is turned as far right and as far left as it will go.
Repeat the procedure if the Torque/Position sensor is not calibrated correctly.

Perhaps some kind soul can clarify ? HOW cna you check the return to central position from far left lock and far right lock when travelling at 30 Kph ?
:(

Thanks all. Sorry for my total confusion...
Joe,.

It is easy. You need bigger free parking space to test it...
Turn on the car. Drive it on a straight line for about 30km/h.
Turn left or right steering wheel. No need to turn steering wheel to 90 degrees. Try just a little bit (50-60 degrees).
And than release the steering wheel. While releasing the steering wheel start to brake a little bit.
The steering wheel will come to central position with tolerance up to 20 degrees (depends how much you have turned the wheel).
You can try to do it as well on lower speed.

Thanks for that, yes, I can probably do that ok at one of the big super markets on Sunday.
Thanks for the advice, I dont think it would be appreciated by the local police if I did it on the motorway lol
