same problem here !
I have a kkl cable with wincheaphead chipset instaead of FTDI and I cannot connect to engine ECU but airbag ecu is working for example...

Same problem here with ELM327 1.4a, test in settings works fine. I don't have a timeout but i says to check my cable

If you an add gasoline ecu such as bosch motronic on Alfa Romeo 147/156 Twin Spark (1.6 1.8 & 2.0), it would be great!
