Personally I wouldn't even bother (as it works with your laptop) but all the info you need is in this thread if you do want to go ahead with the RC mod.

It's a fair bit of messing around and I suspect it wont work anyway

Assuming you only destroyed R04 then I'd go ahead with the full mod suggested by Yani at the start of this thread which involves soldering in a simple RC network.

I found a quick and dirty solution: Bought the cheapest ELM327 interface from eBay (actually V1.4) Disassembled and found I had the board below.
